Through careful research, public commemoration, and communityengagement, the Committee has helped bring this once-overlookedchapter of local history to national attention. The Memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the resilience and sacrifce of these men, and to thebroader contribution of Chinese Australians to our country.

The Balonne community has cherished this historically and culturally significant relationship and embraced theMemorial to the Amoy Shepherds, which sits pride of place in our St George Cemetery since March 2019.

Our Shire shares a rich history with the Chinese community dating back to when the Amoy Shepherds first arrived in the Balonne area in the mid-1800's making a significant contribution to thedevelopment of our region back then and still to the present day. We are forever grateful of SCCMC's hard work laid in creating the connected and innovative communities our Shire enjoys to this day.
